A very good read. I'm a tragic for reading about real mountaineering, while
preferring sun-warmed rock in person. And Lock's book fits right in with those from
some of the great mountaineers I've read about over the years. He has had an
amazing climbing "career" and achieved just about all there is to achieve in this
ultimate high stakes pursuit - all while essentially being an amateur (in the best,
non-professional sense of the word). In any European country, Lock would be a
tremendously well respected media / celebrity figure and professional climber -
here in Australia he is almost unknown outside of the climbing fraternity - just
amazing for a man who has achieved so much.
Anyway - the book. Loved it - the stories are great, the writing clear and
uncomplicated, and Lock apparently doesn't give a rats what anyone else thinks -
very refreshingly un-self-serving. It is sometimes unflattering to him, and all the
more honest for it. You get a vivid glimpse of quite how focused and capable of
endurance you need to be in this sport. Non-climbers get enough detail to
understand what Lock is doing, and climbers like myself (armchair mountaineers)
will be amazed at what this man has achieved. Should be in every Australian
climbers library - as well as anyone interested in Himalayan adventurers or simply
understanding what truly motivated humans can do. Quite inspirational. |
