Return 2 Sender is simply - an excellent DVD. The climbing footage is spectacular, at first focusing on Indian Creek crack lines, then mixing it up with Michael Reardon free-soloing, 10 year old Circadia Jenerik bouldering her age (V10), and the first free ascent of a big wall in Greenland. Mixed in with this is some outrageous base jumping in Mexico (jumping the world's deepest sink hole no less) and some great slacklining. There's also a piece on Biscuit the climbing dog - or more to the point - her predecessor.
First up though is Indian Creek. This part of the film was initially entitled Paralellogams and has been described as 'the best climbing film ever made'. Even if you disagree with such an accolade, it is undoubtedly fits into 'one of the best' categories. Some of the ascents are just plain awe-inspiring, and the lack of soundtrack replaced with just the climbers own battles with oxygen just add to this. Air Sweden (5.13R) (3rd ascent) and From Switzerland With Love (5.13+) (First Ascent) are two primary examples. If you've never seen a climber place a cam on an overhanging wall when his feet are higher than his head - then you're going to love the latter mentioned route.
Timmy O'Neil does a great job of keeping an amusing commentary through other parts of the film - with the best saved til last in his quest to free climb a big wall in Greenland. Michael Reardon's solo's won't be to everyone's taste - but then neither will 10 year old Jenerik bouldering at the Happy's. Some may even categorise these two scenes in the 'Somewhat Disturbing' basket. (Jenerik has since gone on to boulder V11 - and climb a 5.13b/29 - still only 11 years old). Reardon meanwhile - is still alive (if you had any doubt).
Watch the film and make your own decisions - but I think you'll agree - this is one flick that is 'fun for all the family!'

The indian creek bit is without a doubt one of the best bits of climbing footage ive seen. Ignore Reardon & cicada and you will love this vid. |
