One Step Beyond is a novel that explores the tradedgy, which overcame Warren Macdonald's life on the fateful night of April 9th 1997.

A simple bushwalk with a new found mate, turned into an epic struggle for survival when a weather eroded rock wall collapsed, crushing and pinning Warren to the bed of a rising stream. A good days hike from help and unable to free him, Warren's friend set off on a mad dash for civilisation while Warren lay trapped and dying.

Some how a rescue was effected and Warren survived to tell the tale, but at a terrible cost. Both his legs had to be amputated. Warren, a hiker and occasional climber was quite literally torn from a way of life that the rest of us climbers know and love with a passion. Not to be defeated, One Step Beyond goes on to describe Warren's remarkable recovery and even more remarkable subsequent ascent of Cradle mountain in Tasmania, the culmination of which requires some modest (sometimes roped) scrambling that can get the best of men without such a devastating handicap.

A truly inspiring read! The front cover has four words printed across the top: "courage, spirit, strength, guts". I think that sums it up pretty well. The story is well written and very engaging. Quite a page-turner actually.
