This is a biography of one of our finest mountaineers who made the first Australian ascent of Everest, K2 , and Mt Minto. It also records his contribution to Australian rockclimbing in which he was involved in developing areas such as Bungonia, the Warrumbungles and the Wolgan Valley. The effects of climbing on Mortimer's personal relationships are analysed which provides valuable lessons to those intent on devoting themselves to climbing. However this psychological examination seems to detract from the book. For some reason Hall's writing, although competent, lacks the spark to do his subject justice. Overall it fails to inspire, but may be of interest to climbing history buffs. |
