The first mountaineering book I read, I was instantly impressed and found it hard to put this one down. Some of Joe's tales are enough to send shivers up your spine and really make you THINK about what drives high altitude climbers to do what they do. It takes the concept of fear, evident in many of Joe's endeavours, and puts it right in your face, sending your pulse racing. I immediately passed this one on to all my friends, climbers and not. Now I'm just waiting to get it back so I can read it again! |

Totally agree with previous review. My first read of a climbing book too and likewise I am waiting to get it back or will buy another!! The reason I am visiting this site is that I had forgotten the name and was desperately searching for it!! Read past the first chapter then you won,t want to put it down. |

Joe Simpson does a lot of soul searching in this book. It's not really a book about him climbing the Eiger or climbing anything in particular, it's a book about him wrestling with the idea of giving up climbing due to so many of his friends having been killed in the mountains. Joe Simpson is a very good writer and this is an excellent book. |
