This is about the best "instructional" book I've seen; going from
introduction to mountaineering. Packed with pictures, anecdotes, diagrams
and how-to examples, it's incredibly useful not only for the interested
person, but to photocopy & use (um...with permission...) when instructing
others.
The main reason being, every topic is covered across a two page spread -
so you get an A3 poster with the key points for most things.
For example, in my University Outdoor club, when running intro to climbing
days I just hand out Garth's spread of the knots page for them to pin up at
their desk with a loop of cord to play with.
Gripes: there could be a bit more history, a bit more on the
impact/controversies (though some would say omission here is a positive)
and definitely needs to reference the photos - so many amazing features
with no idea which country, never mind crag, they're from!

It's definitely not the only book you'll need, but if you're looking for a
christmas present to help someone understand the basics (and not so
basics) of climbing - this would be my suggestion.
