This flick is fairly entertaining and has some decent live footage, but remember that it was shot in '78, before the days of Imax, etc. So I bought it for the historical value, plus because I've always been impressed with Messner's feats.
The movie has all of the key elements of the true story line, which can be found in the books written by Reinhold and Peter. Theirs was an incredible partnership, but most of that glue was eroded away by this ascent. You get some hints of the stresses involved and how it effected their friendship, but not like you can glean from the books. But this is a short movie apparently meant to be more of a historical document of the men and their achievement as opposed to a drama of the psychology involved. I consider it an all-time classic and a must-have, even if it has a few minor flaws. |
