Harness

The thing that looks like a well ventilated pair of shorts and makes you feel like you're wearing a nappy. You can't climb without it. (Well technically you can. Apparently in "the old days when men were real men", the climber would lash the rope itself about themselves making a pseudo-harness. However I imagine they wouldn't be "real men" for long if they took a serious fall. Ouch!). Some harnessness come with "gear loops", though others may prefer a "gear sling".
