Clear heat-shrink wrap (from Jaycar or any electronics supplier)?

It's just run-of-the-mill electrical shrink wrap. It comes in 1m lengths and I cut it down to 40mm lengths to seal the ends of my ropes. I've put two layers of shrink wrap on the ends of one of my ropes, which also works fine. It doesn't bond to the rope and can be cut off if you ever need to remove it. Costs a dollar or so per meter.

Perhaps:
- putting a numbered label on the ends of your ropes and and then putting a layer of shrink-wrap over that; or to take it further
- putting one layer of shrink wrap on, putting a numbered label on and then putting a second layer of shrink wrap on

A hair dryer or even a cook top works well to shrink the wrap. I do mine over an induction cook top :)
