So we’d all rather be climbing outdoors. Occasionally however something comes between us and real rock, whether it’s weather, petrol prices, darkness or traffic. On those rare and dreary times we make our way to the gym, spend a bit of money and play like circus monkeys training for the big show.

I’ve done very little gym climbing before moving to Melbourne. I used to live in Arizona and Oregon and visited a few gyms on DARK, STORMY days. The routes at these gyms are marked with colored tape. The actual color of the hold has no significance to the route itself.

In most Australian and New Zealand gyms the routes are set using only holds of similar color. This restricts the gym’s route setters from:

A: using different colored holds.
B: using the same hold on multiple routes
C: using different textured and style of holds.

Some may say that tape is too hard to see, that it peels off, that it’s too hard to upkeep, too expensive and too sticky. But I reckon that when tape is placed in long segments it has so many more advantages than disadvantages when setting routes indoors. If you agree, let the owner of your local gym know.
