Rope - static v dynamic for top-roping and leading 24-Jan-2012 At 1:55:02 PM Dan Theman

I didn't say the stretching necessarily causes them to get stuck (although it may), just makes pulling them harder when they do get stuck as the load you apply to the rope is absorbed by the rope before it gets to the object it is snagged on (like when you pull down your climbing rope when there is lots of drag, takes a bit to get started)... and yes they are more likely to get stuck on a retrieval in my experience.

In canyons you abseil repeatedly and often are jumping about avoiding obstacles, going over undercut sections, around corners etc... the rock varies in composition from polished fine grained sand to coarse grained to conglomerate (plus the loose sand on your rope wears it as well). it trashes ropes. when i rap on my climbing rope i try to avoid bouncing it about if I can (usually possible due to the raps being nice and straight etc...). quite often you are rapping straight off trees or straight through slings which will wear the rope as well.

Sorry in my experience wet static ropes are much nicer to rap on than wet dynamic ropes, but each to their own. If dynamic is so good for canyons then why is that everyone except climbers with some old dynamic (I am in this boat) use statics.

Statics are also nicer to ascend if they get stuck as well due to the lack of bounce. They also have a more durable stiffer sheath.
