if you wanted to go back even further, my dad and his brothers didnt have harnesses or boots, at least when they were begining. my dad used his dads cricket boots, and had the rope tied around his waist. a story i've heard over the years is that one of my dads brothers came of the roofs off Syrinx high up on tiger wall and was held by a waist belay, or it might of been that the rope was tied around his waist, i think the first was most probable.
