You need a decent wattage temperature controlled soldering iron. 100 watts plus.
Good thermal mass and about 200C to melt the rope.
Cigy lighters melt the sheath but does not carrry through to the core.
The ones used at the gear stores are great for webbing but not so good for rope.
I have used a plumbers iron with great success, heat the whole end section of the rope to ensure the core is molten and trim end with a kinfe.
You can pick up an iron for $60 around the traps.
You can use it for other home renovations as well!!!
