Cheers to all for the good advise! The salt crystal theory makes sense, and I will wash my rope when sections of it get dropped in the sea proper (but not when it only gets the normal spray/grime from the salty rock). I agree with Neil that crystal wear would be reletively minor, particularly when im sure my rope contains many small sand particals that have become embeded there over the last year of use, that would be causeing similar damage.

Fridays climbing trip resulted in only my partners rope getting dropped in the drink, so no wash for my rope this week. Shame, because the only time I have a bath these days is when im wasnhing my rope or sleeping bag!
