Hi Mike, Just a thought on the rock core samples (you probably have already thought about this) - do you know anyone that works within a geology department at a University? If so, you may be able to borrow a suitable tool. I'd even suggest emailing an academic within such a department and asking what they would suggest for your purposes. I have a friend who did her PhD on fur seals in Antartica/Macquarie Island. She took very deep core samples of the ice to look for ancient DNA and remains in order to do a phylogenetics type study. I believe the sampler she used would be far to big for your purposes, however someone within an appropriate field may be able to help. Great work btw :-)
