Hi, I use a petzl basic, not a gri-gri - but all I do is tie a single line (usually my static as it's harder wearing) and throw it over, abseil to the bottom of the cliff (this is only for max 18/20m climbs!!). I then (whilst standing at the bottom) attach my basic, back up with a prussik above the device, and coil the remaining rope up below. The weight of the remaining rope is usually enough to ensure the rope runs freely, especially whenever I use my dynamic instead as it's much longer and hence more weight! It works fine, great for running laps of climbs and it means there's never much slack so falls are kept to a minimum of height, no big whippers.
That's for using a basic, so I just use the weight of the rope itself to hang on the bottom, sometimes my approach shoes as well so at the end I just haul up from the top and are good to go from there!
