i've always tried to keep it either all twins or all half rope on a pitch. i don't like the idea of doing twins up the top either as one might take up faster than the other & give friction, even if it doesn't break i don't imagine the wear is very healthy for the rope.

on this topic, maybe someone can explain to me how crossing half ropes happens, i've tried playing with the idea but never quite figured out how its possible to cross them over so they are a problem, but apparently it causes accidents now and then. is it one rope getting caught on the other side of a draw somehow or is it twisting the ropes around each other (so you'd end up with a twist at the harness as well) that causes problems?
