some good advice there. I have used old school Salomon Guide 9s for several summer seasons in NZ and circa 6000m peaks in both Himalaya and Andes, no problem. It really depends on your circulation too, mine seems to be pretty good. Good sock choice and overboot gaiters help with insulation.
For a beginner in NZ summer, don't bother with plastics.
As you set your sights to the higher ranges you need to consider the style of climb as well as just the height. The type of approach, skiing, walking etc. Climb logistics, do you plan for several bivvies on the snow at altitude ? Technical aspect, is it a highly technical climb where boot precision is necessary or a snow plod ? the season ?
If you are combining a climb with a ski approach consider the dynafit system with AT boots.

Whatever you end up with make sure you tape your feet up with white Leukoplast or duct tape and carry some compeed. Blisters really destroy morale.
