I had a large bucket tear to the medial meniscus fixed in August last year. Most of the time they remove the offending bit and recovery is nice and quick - Normally back in business in 6 weeks or so. Unfortunately for me, my surgeon decided to mend mine which involves a much longer (6 month) recovery. The plus side is that you are much less likely to get osteoarthritis than if you have a partial menisectomy. I can use mine pretty well now but can't get into a full squat yet. The annoying thins is the mental aspect of the repair - when its removed you can have confidence that its no going to happen again, but with the repair, its always in the back of my mind that its going to pop again and I get the fear on certain moves. Do loads of pre-hab to build up your quads - you'll be amazed at how much they waste during the down time. Less quad = unstable knee-cap= pain.
