Hi there, it's actually Spanky here, not rokmonkee...
My broken leg (tib & fib) is well on the way to healing (except for the HOLE gouged in my fibula because the surgeons used the wrong screw size through my lower tibia. Morons.) and my doctor is quite impressed with the amount of calcium I've accumulated around the break site.
I take daily:
1 calcium tablet (I think two would be overdoing it) 600mg - also has Vitamin D in it
1 magnesium tablet (you want to take half as much magnesium as you do calcium in mg)
1 fish oil 1000mg
1 glucosamine 750mg (since there are also ligaments affixing the bone that will also be damaged)
1 lysine 500mg
1 vitamin C
1 multivitamin every other day - in this, I particularly want B vitamins & selenium.
1 vitamin E 250mg
Excellent foods are:
spinach or other leafy green things
sardines
- these have vitamin K in them which is required for calcium absorption. You can eat all the calcium you want but absorption is the key, so the vitamin c, multivitamin and lysine help with that. vitamin e promotes circulation in extremities and with healing.
Avoid:
red meat
sugar
salt
fat - these rob calcium.
I would highly recommend picking up a pilates dvd - you can do this lying down and don't need to move your leg much, keeps the rest of your body in motion. Increased blood circulation promotes healing. Will also help with sore back that you will get from crutches and you'll have great abba-dabbas by the time you get back on the rock.
I have NOT had any problems with kidney stones, I don't think one tablet a day will hurt. Eating watermelon apparently helps dissolve kidney stones so if you do happen to get burning kidney pains.... but it is unlikely. It's not like you can't move at all...
Best of luck with your recovery! |
