Not so much stress cracks, but a change in how the materials fracture and the energy required to cause the fracture. Some steels suffer from having a ductile - brittle transition which is temperature dependent, only steels with a face centred cubic crystal structure exhibit this transition. The actual temperature is dependent upon several variables including the specific alloy, grain size. However, aluminium alloys do not experience this transition as they have the wrong crystal structure, so are much more useful in impact situations at low temperatures. |
