"On 31 August at approximately 11am, a call for help was made by a man who had fallen down a cliff while abseiling at Werribee Gorge, between Bacchus Marsh and Ballan west of Melbourne.

Crews from CFA, SES, Parks Victoria, Ambulance and Police, all worked together to rescue the man. Locating the man was the initial difficulty, given he had limited phone reception.

Firefighters from Ballan Fire Brigade went on foot to search for the man in the ravine, and after more than 1.5 hours, located him. After that, the difficult task of winching the man to safety up the cliff was left to the expertise of high-angle rope rescue crews from Ballarat City Fire Brigade, Geelong City Fire Brigade, SES Ararat with support from Victoria Police Search and Rescue and Ballan CFA crews.

Parks Victoria’s knowledge of the Gorge assisted greatly in the rescue.

It took approximately four hours to locate and rescue the man, who was treated by Ambulance Victoria on scene. The man was considered very lucky with bruising and a suspected fractured wrist.

Roster Duty Officer for CFA District 15 Archie Conroy said, “We urge anyone that’s going out doing high risk activities to make sure you have someone with you at all times, as you can’t always rely on mobile phone reception”."
