A few facts... He was dehydrated. That's what happens when you drink bad (creek) water and spend the next 24 hours vomiting. He intended to do a single day canyon on the Saturday, when the weather was nowhere near as bad. Unfortunately his plan didn't eventuate and he spent the next two days trying to self-rescue in very poor weather. Only once he thought he had no other option did he set off the PLB.
