Registration + Insurance per year = $1300 per year
Replacement tyres every two years = $800 ($400 per year)
Brakes $200 per year
Servicing $300 per year
Timing Belt/points/coolant/etc throw in about $300 per year
Total estimate if nothing major goes wrong/needs replacing = $2500 per year
Not including depreciation obviously

Average number of kms per year = 25,000 (which is more than most drivers will do)
Return trip to Araps = 660 km = 1/38 of total.
So by my tight-arsed budgeting the cost of turning up to the doorstep of the person getting the lift is about $65.
I don't understand why the driver would wear this cost in addition to the cost of a share of the petrol when all passengers are benefiting.
At the end of the day you can do what you want but if you want a lift you should at least recognise that the cost of petrol for a trip to Araps is probably only half the story.
