Come spring it is all systems go - intend to get out to the crags (Golden Canyon, Ibex Valley boulders, Rock Gardens, at every opportunity. Got a few other things on the go as well - sea kayaking - got to get some mileage under the keel this season. I do canoeing and kayaking but prefer the latter . Canoed the Teslin River and part of the Yukon a few years back - 10 days - lots of wildlife and good pics. I have a Ford Explorer 4X4 so I will be definitely getting out and about.
Also promised my two youngsters (son-11, daughter 13)I would hike them over the Chilkat Trail in early July - world class hike - probably do it in 4 or 5 with them rather than the 3 1/2 it took with my Aussie student from Warragul (east of Melb) in 2004. One of my daughters friend's mom asked if they could go along as well so it could become an expedition. Aiming to tick Australia Mt in a bit of an epic in late June. Also would like to hike in from the Wheaton valley to Crag XXX - Bugaboos type granite spires south of here that have never seen a climbing rope - mother of all granite boulders as well. If do like to bike - give the Chilkoot Road Relay a go - fabulous thing - from the interior over the Coast Moutains to Haines, Alaska on the coast - grizzly bears feeding (not on the bikers - no meat just hard sinew) on shoots alongside the road. 1200 to it every year - teams singles, the whole shebang. Good weather and you will have good memories. I can
line you up with the skiing folks as well if you stay on into the winter - they held the 1981 World X-Country ski championship here so it is good. Even got downhill at Mt.Sima now and it is a haven for the snow boarders also. Not a lot of ice climbing hereabouts but the lad with the climbing wall out at Takhini Hotsprings has turned his outdoor wall into an ice climbing wall by pouring water over it - I just got the gist of this the other day so will have to find time to roust my gear out and have a go.
There are a few embedded Aussies hereabouts so you won't be lonely - a few wild-eyed Tassies - one of which owns a local hotel, another an outdoor educator who also does construction - he was one of my first climbing instructors -and a good bloke. A chap from Perth works up at the Canada Games Centre - a few of these blokes are here because they fell to the wiles and wares of some Canadian lasses - so you are forewarned!!!! In any case, let me know when you are coming and I can provide some support and save you some pesos in the process You will have some fun. I will be gone for a week in August to Edmonton - taking my son to a summer hockey camp for a week- otherwise here through the season. Cheers.
