Hey there,

Public transport is fine (train &bus) from Spencer street station to Horsham and then it is easy to hitch.
Make sure you stay in the CBD (the city) when you stay in Melbourne, then you can walk to all the good bars, cafes, and the interesting inner suburbs. There are quite a few hostels near the Queen victoria market which are good.
Don't buy any climbing gear in Australia , it is crazy expensive.
....but do go to the outdoor shops in Little Bourk street in the city if you want any helpful advice re:climbing .
Hitching to Horsham to do the supermarket shopping is easy, and there is an outdoor shop there which has some camping basics.
There is a lot of climbing to be done in the shade at Arapiles, and depending on what's happening in the Grampians with bush fire recovery, there are great cooler options there too.
It is easy to get lifts to the Grampians with other climber in The Pines (the one campground at Arapiles).
"The Pines" is the meeting place.
If you can find the tempest /mentz guide book anywhere ...buy it!
There will be fire restrictions (no open fires), but you will be able to use a gas cooker most of the time.
Sorry , can't give you a lift....looking for one myself.
