When I did my course they made us lead up 30m, place 2 pieces (it was a 0 and 00 friend) climb up so it was at our feet and fall backwards.. It gave me lots of confidence (afterwards) and off I went leading everything I could until I had a ground fall from 15m. I know now that the piece I placed wasnt cammed enough and we had too much slack in the system etc. My advice is to take your time, place as much gear as you can, if it looks like your not going to get another piece in for a few meters, put 2 bits in. When learning try and get to the top with an empty rack and take the time to make sure every placement is bomber or if its not know why and get something else in asap. Some may say this is overkill.. maybe right.. but belive me after you've had a fall that could have killed you, you might see the point.... Remember it supposed to be FUN... :-)
