i got this brief report from vanessa just today; "Alpine conditions are really crap at present- no freeze. We went to Unwin and Zubriggens and Silberhorn are death traps. Drove to Fox and flew into Pioneer but it never really froze so after 5 days of plodding around on mush (Tasman being way too unsafe in such conditions) I flew out..." i know its not very informative but it just adds to the general consensus. if you're going there in summer i'd definitely think about doing the alpine rock routes instead.
