Depending on what u are doing, I would highly recommend staying with plastics. I.e, if it is just for mountaineering and u dont need much of a hike in and out, i would steer clear of leathers. Yes thhey are more comfortable, but bear in mind, if u are after a more "all rounder" boot it will be just that.. not as stiff as plastics for when u want them to be. I have a pair of La Sportiva lhotse's (leather), wore them on only one trip, and they SUCKED!!!!!! I have never used them since.
They do make double leather boots now which i havent had experience in, but i reccomend sticking with double boots (the inner's can be used as hut shoes). I have a pair of Lowa Civetta Extreme's for my plastics and they are very comfortable and warm, I dont have any shin problems with them. I would say that the boot u were using was not a right fit / right boot for you. Some plastics are super stiff in the ankle, some suite wider feet, some suit narrow feet. So it is a matter of shopping around, the right pair of plastics for you should'nt give you these problems (though remember they are still stiffer then leathers). If you want more ankle flex there are boots out there that have a hinge/anlkle pivot which can help take some of the pressure of the shins. In short, having used both leather and plastics for mountaineering, i think plastics are a better option (but this is only my opinion). I hope this gives you some food for thought. Cheers. |
