I for one plan to head for the mountains at some stage. It has always felt like it is the end game or the ultimate objective - something of a natural progression - as far as my climbing is concerned. But I'll only do this when I think my skills and my psyche are mature enough. My undertsanding form the literature and my own brief forays onto higher ground is that it (mountaineering) is complicated and dangerous, but supremely rewarding. I wouldn't want to be stepping into that environment under anyone elses rules, expectations, or any pressure that I need to be extreme or "make the grade". I think when you combine the latter features with a very sensitive and marginal situation, you're stacking the odds against yourself and whoever is tied to your rope.

K, You must have experienced some amazing highs and lows in your climbing years. Your opinions are obviously highly respected here and the names you mentioned in your post (above) are legends in our time.
