Al-Sadr: Australians are kidnapping targets

"The radical Shi'ite cleric at the centre of the current insurrection in Iraq said Australians in the country are being targeted for kidnapping.

A spokesman for Moqtada al-Sadr, who is holed up in the Holy city of Najaf, confirmed the threat through an interpreter to ABC radio.

He answered yes in response to whether it was okay to kidnap Australians and Americans.

"We have knowledge and information of some who are trying to kidnap Australians and trying to kidnap Americans as well, trying to kidnap also soldiers or officers or citizens from all the countries who are participating in Iraq," Mr al-Sadr said.

"How can they be surprised if the Iraqi people are trying to take some hostages to exchange them. "
