Oh absolutely there are contradictions. But on the other hand, some people (I'm not saying this is you!) find it too easy to say "oh there's nothing to be done, the world is going down the plughole". There are things can be done, and easily.
There appears to be overwhelming evidence to show that cutting meat from one's diet is one of the easiest and yet most significant things one can do to help ease one's carbon, ecological and (obviously) animal cruelty impact.
I've seldom heard of vegetable growers getting pinged for land clearing - or paper producers - that tends to be graziers.
As for fertilizers for crops, I've read that most crops that are grown to feed livestock - hence the razing of the Amazon, etc - so that if we cut back on meat, we simultaneously cut back on agriculture and its harmful effects.
Any of the many online "footprint calculators" tend to halve one's number if one removes meat from one's diet.
