I'll start. I've had some fun giving advice over the years as well.

Most recent classic. Was buying a belay device from MD's in Canberra. "I want a BD Guide please. Don't care what colour". He spends some time looking around and says none in stock. I look at the shelves and note there's literally 20 cast iron Figure 8s on the shelf.

"who still buys those?" I ask.
"All the pros" he confidently retorts. "All the army guys buy those."
"Really? I hate them. They munt the rope severely on big abseils. Can't belay on double either."
"yeah, but you really need one for FAST ABSEILS. They're great when you need to get down in a hurry."

Anyone here ever done an abseil that didn't go fast enough?

In other stories, I worked at kathmandu for a few years.

One woman came in bought a PolyCarb water bottle up to me. "Is this waterproof?"
Ahhh, yeah, of course it is.
"So that means I can put boiling water in it?"

Further on, a guy is buying some Al saucepans. "What's the melting point of Aluminium"
Ergh, quite a bit, somewhere near 1600 deg C I think. What are you planning on doing with it?
"Just cooking. But I've got a really good stove and I'm worried about the pans melting while I'm boiling water".

And lastly, my favourite.
Polite, well dressed lady in her 50s comes in. "Where are your compasses?"
Bored and feeling like some amusement, "They're over there, but I have to correct a common misconception. The correct plural of compass is cumpie"
"Oh my goodness, I'm sorry. I'll try again. Could you show me where your cumpie are?"

I had to go outside to stop laughing.
