I have never had a problem getting shellite in Tassie, although I think from memory we went to a hardware in Hobart...
Slightly (even more) off topic, we recently found out how different shellite, white gas, solvente and bencina blanca can be on a S America trip. It seems that all types of good stove fuel are referred to by these names interchangeably, but the differences between the way they burn and the amount of residue left is incredible. A couple we were walking with effectively destroyed their MSR burning bencina blanca obtained from a hardware (where it is also used as a form of paint thinner), whereas at one stage we scored some MSR brand bencina blanca (Industria Argentina!!) which burned as well as shellite obtained in Aus. One lot of solvente and a different lot of bencina blanca required us to burn using the kero jet in our MSR. It all made we want a Trangia at one stage, it was almost taking that long to boil water! On the other hand, butane cylinders were everywhere.
On an aside, I reckon giving the Spirit guys the bottle of shellite to put with the flammables/explosives would be the best way to go. Otherwise find a hardware in devonport. |
