I agree with both of you, it's a slippery position. On one hand, people were concerned for him, and if you apply the rule 'I didn't ask them to look for me' the future looks grim for humanity. On the other, he might have wanted an epic adventure, and searching for him ruined his adventure. The only way to be sure is to establish before you leave what you want to happen in the event you're lost. He left no instructions, his friends were rightly worried, so they searched for him. I think in this case he's culpable and should definitely make some cash based gesture to the volunteer Organisation for gear etc, but it does raise interesting questions for the future.

I wonder if the Koori had a word for 'lost in the wilderness'?
