I've chosen to use those movies to my advantage.
I've spent about 1 month a year alpine climbing in NZ for the last half a dozen or so years.
I have a desk job and when people at work ask me "what do you mean you're going mountaineering? what's mountaineering?" I just say "Have you seen Vertical Limit? It's exactly like that" - which is actually truer than it might be because the movie was filmed in Mt Cook National Park.
I find this prevents the long and involved explanations, weird questions and eventual awkward "Oh alright then...", people walk away feeling like they understand and that makes them comfortable.

Though I did have a great moment with an ex-boss who said "so ice climbing? are you going to do it with those ice picks?" - no I was planning on using my bare hands mate...
