Im living in Hobart the moment, but spent 6 months in Launceston doing work experience as a student in 1998. Hobart has an excellent climbing gym, and I had no problem finding people to climb with there. I dont know how youd go about it otherwise. There are normally other climbers at Coles Bay, and in the Cataract Gorge at Launy, but at other areas its very rare that you see other climbers.
There is a big divide between northern tasmania and southern tasmania (we drink Cascade beer in the South, they drink Boags in the north for a start) and this extends somewhat to climbing. Hobart climbers tend to climb at Mt Wellington, Tasman Peninsula, Adamsfield, whilst Launceston climbers climb at the Gorge, Ben Lomond, Hillwood. Coles Bay is halfway between, and is neutral territory. The odd raid is made to the cliffs in the other groups turf, but normally only so you can speak with authority to your mates about how chossy and nasty it is ;-).
Tassies in the best economic shape its been in for years apparently. Lots of jobs. If you want to breed Tassie Devils be quick, as theyre all dying of cancer unfortunalty.
