If I had 4 "climbing" days to spend in Tassie, id probably spend them as follows:
1/2 day Cataract Gorge, 1/2 Day Duck Reach (both in or near Launceston City Center). Climbs at Duck Reach are easier to locate than at Cataract with the Craglets guide, as the guide has line drawings of the buttresses to help. Long Knife (14) is a classic chimney (if there is such a thing), and The Ideal Genuine Climb (22) is an excellent "sporty" route.
2 Days at Coles Bay, this place rules.
1 Day at Parrot Shelf Cliff / Paradiso. There is a very good 21 sports route (shockwave?) at the paradiso, and an of 17 right next to it. 5minutes walk away from the Paradisio is the Parrot Shelf cliff, which has 15 to 20 trad routes grade 10 to 21, as well as a couple of sports routes at grade 20. The climbs arnt world beaters, but the location is amazing, and the walk in quite pleasant. Plus its near the Port Arthur Convict Settlement, so if your into historical stuff you can check it out as well.
The weather.....Who knows! Coles Bay normaly has the best weather in the state, so your unlucky if you get rained out there. Ive been in tassie for 8 months now, and I can only recall one weekend when the weather stopped me climbing (lots of shower dodging has occured though) so the weather really isnt to bad generally. |
