Remember people were climbing in hiking boots and with static ropes around their waist before modern equipment appeared.

And obviously we are rather talking about sport climbing than trad (as Rich pointed out before) although I am convinced that lead gym climbing also helps for trad lead climbing since it is climbing anyway.
