I reckon less then 10% of the people on the mountain would have been doing it "unguided". If you arrange your own expedition permit you are required to have a liason officer and climbing sherpa etc with associated headaches of paperwork which you really want an agency sorting for you..Its a big capital outlay and you really need at least 6 people minimum to make it viable. The best bet is to get a position on a mates permit (this is what rob and ryan did) and it works out quite cheap. Some companies eg Field Touring also have a 'logistics only' package which is also good value. Because of the traffic there is unfortunately fixed lines from below camp 1 to the summit. So if you want a remote adventure stay away. Saying that, it was a really fun climb, just time the ascent between the big groups, be acclimatised and summit from Camp 2.
