If you look carefully under the sporting goods policy with Qantas, they have different rules for each type of sport, however, climbing goods are not listed. But they do have a policy that states that they will charge upto 3kg of excess for sporting goods. I checked this, before comming over to Europe, with skiing and climbing equip, and they charge you the 3kg of excess as a maximum, and weight after that was "free" as they stated it....
