I find that when I abseil and use a back up prusik with my atc, it is sometimes easiest if I connect the prusik to a crab on my right leg loop and shorten it so that if I sort of straighten my right leg the prusik is well below the atc. If I bend my right leg up a bit then the prusik is close enough to the atc that I can feed rope through the atc without using my left hand at all and my right hand doesn't need to be behind me, when you need to slide the prusik down the rope, just don't grip the whole lot too lightly, keep preasure on the rope and it all should work fairly well (plus it means you can't go too fast). I don't know if this is what most people do anyway but it seems to work fine....?
