Hey Organ Pipe,
Arapiles, is by far the best place to practice leading, in my opinion of course.
the quartsite lends itself to awesome placements and even alot of the questionable protrusions are solid as.
I have been climbing since i was little, but only the last 4 years have i started getting serious about it.
Leading is something that every (trad)climber has to face, to grow into a 'real' climber (like saying, "i rock climb", or saying "i am a rock climber!")
I usually lead anything under 18, but a few weeks ago, on a WVCC trip to the You Yangs, i lead a 19 and a 21. Now, i shat myself on both of them, but i ate up the adrenalin in the process! I loved it. Basically, just get out there and have a go. As long as you know how to lead, and your confident that your gear is not gunna pop, go for it!
As for jumping onto your own gear, well, if your rich enough to replace whatever you jump on to keep it all safe, go for your life....I, on the other hand, cherish what gear i have, and wont fall on it unless i have to. If in doubt, downclimb. Cause really, you fall on your gear, you have to look at retiring it.
Where are you located, that you visited Araps?? Maybe we can organise to go for a climb sometime...
Good luck dude,
