My take is that climbing is an interesting subculture. It looks stupid to the outsider. Yet climbing is conducted by (as a generalisation) well educated people who have created a significant body of literature about it: unlike skateboarders, mountain bikers, for example. This UKC thread contained the weirdest mixture of abstruse philosophy and 4 lettered abuse I've ever seen.
