Trouble is, when you train with a weight penalty, you get stronger... adverse handicap effect long term.
Apparently Jo Brown deliberately stacks on weight (eats too many bacon and cheese oatcakes (ask a Stoke-on-Trent geezer)) and trains as normal. Then sheds for the project/comp/impressing girls.

When I'd go on mountainbike rides with a big posie, the whippets would all get to the top of the hills first and have a good rest waiting for the clydesdales. When they'd get there, we'd all move off again. This was a natural governor for training...
The slow guys also got canny and learned about the ambition and impeteous of youth "Wonder who can get to the top of that 1km 45deg gravel laden hill fastest?" - all the young bucks would race off on a tangent, while the slow dudes would sit around and have a cigarette - all in order to level the pack some.
