I climb a lot on 1 'single' rope and one 'half' rope. Using an ATC as the belay device ive never had any issues either belaying or abseiling. I like this system for the flexibility, you get to a cliff and have the option of leadign on double ropes, doing 50 m abseils, and also the option of ditching the 'half' rope and using the single rope if you want to do a short sport route.
