My friend Ted Cais died yesterday.
He lived in USA since 1975 and is probably the best unknown climber that Australia has ever produced. He craved adventure. He thought about ethics. He worked out. He was a master boulderer. He was an off-width monster.
Significant first and second ascents abound. Think about climbs like The Infinity, The Minotaur, Clockwork Orange, Venom, Juggernaut, Conquistidor, Flameout, Clemency and many more - lots more.
Observers were always astounded at his strength and his technical footwork.
In the US he established a reputation at the Gunks where his partner was the legendary John Stannard. He was admired by the uber-hero of bouldering, John Gill.
Ted was a research chemist who specialised in the development of compounds which stung, stank or stained. His early mentor was the legendary Bert Salmon, his early idol was the bold Les Wood, his mid career partner was Rick White, his lifetime idol was Bryden Allen and his best friend was Mike Meadows.
