I read the report. It reads like any other bit of spin. Firstly where is the empirical evidence, the proof about all these painted motifs, quarry sites? What does it mean rediscovered?
Is it all over Declaration Crag? Cage/fence off the areas concerned. Put up an information board. I’m all for preserving the past. I like history. In fact I reckon a few more statues and information representing earlier Australians alongside more recent examples would be an improvement.
But this is not about that; this is about power, as gordoste said. It’s an unholy alliance between Parks Victoria (Australia really) and Aboriginal groups. Parks are like all ruling elites. They believe they are the only ones with the knowledge and purity to rule. They have to control the unruly rabble.
The Aboriginal groups have gained the moral high ground and they mean to use it. Theirs is the holy crusade. Notice the language. It is that generic religiocultural spin that only they have. After all didn’t they “care” for the land and this was done for thousands of years. There are those intangible values such as creation stories.
Gordoste, they have the power and you and I don’t. We are excluded from any park management. Ularu was closed not because it was some holy site with historical human activity but supposedly because it offended the locals and they were concerned about people getting hurt and dying. No it was about exerting power.
What the “alliance” is saying, is now you be good boys and girls with Declaration Crag and we might let you climb elsewhere. If you are not good, then we will find more historical cultural sites elsewhere.
. I first climbed on Dec. Crag in March1974 and have spent countless enjoyable and satisfying hours there since. It is not some worthless piece of rock. Even if you can only climb Hammer grade 4, (might be me soon) it is valuable.
