Jack Pettigrew has recently died as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident. Jack was an active climber in the Sydney scene throughout the 1960s and early 70s with an eye for adventurous and daring ascents. Highlights of his climbing career include the first ascents of Ball’s Pyramid and the Sydney Route (a Toi la Gloire) on Frenchman’s Cap. He also did the first descent of Claustral Canyon.

Jack had an extremely successful career as a neuroscientist. His first major claim to fame was to explain how binocular vision worked. He subsequently worked on an amazing variety of topics including the origin of the outback minmin lights, the interpretation of aboriginal rock art, the evolution of flight and the mechanisms of bipolar disorder (from which he suffered).
