This ascent of the East Face of Pope's Nose - combining scale, commitment and a harder & more sustained level of climbing - is arguably a significant advance in standard in the Southern Alps. In terms of soloing this is probably the first development (best word? I'm not that keen on saying 'progression' regarding soloing.) beyond Bill McLeod's winter climbs and perhaps some of Peter K Dickson's solo first ascents of some rock routes.
A super impressive application of Guy McKinnon's imaginative eye for a line and his impeccable style. |
